Nov 22
The 42nd Jnanpith award for the year 2006 was jointly given to eminent Sanskrit Scholar Satyavrat Shastri and noted Konkani author Ravindra Kelekar. The 41st Jnanpith award for 2005 was also announced and it went to eminent Hindi poet Kunwar Narayan. The decisions were taken in a meeting of Jnanpith selection board in New Delhi on Saturday chaired by noted scholar Dr. Sitakant Mahapatra, who is also a Jnanpith awardee.
This the first time that the Jnanpith award went to authors writing in Konkani and Sanskrit. The award carries five lakh rupees in cash, a citation and a shawl.
Satyavrat Shastri has written three Mahakavyas of about thousand stanzas each in Sanskrit and won many coveted awards including Sahitya Akademi and medallion of honour from the Catholic University, Belgium. Ravindra Kelekar played a key role in the establishment of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal and is perhaps the single most important player in building the literary culture in Konkani. He was also a Sahitya Akademi awardee. Kunwar Narayan has a stalwart presence in the field of Hindi poetry for the last many decades and is associated with new poetry in Hindi.
